Personal Development Planning

Life is a succession of peaks and valleys.

Life is a succession of peaks and valleys. We get older, and we live longer, but also there are times when we have to experience these feelings.

What is a Peak? A peak is a level we reach when we have achieved all our goals and completed our journey. Sometimes we forget about the valley because it is right in front of us, and it distracts us from the path. We forget that we are going back to a valley, and we are about to go back into the past. The past is filled with fear and disappointment, sadness and regret. We have to go back there to confront those past hurts. We have to be there with a pen in hand to write our stories. These "stories" have to be written to learn and to move on.

What is a valley? A valley is a level we reach when we have failed to achieve our goals. We are not aware of that failure, and we don't realize that we don't have any more goals and that we have to start all over again. The whole process is painful. The pain motivates us. The pain motivates us even more if we realize that we are in a valley and nothing we can do about it. We must move back to a peak. That is the only way that we can go forward. The past is gone, and we can only hope that we don't meet that same pain in the future. That is why we need to concentrate our energies and resources to achieve our goals and to fulfill our purpose in life.

These two ideas are the essence of every personal development plan.

 * The idea that we have to stay in the peak so that we can fulfill our purpose in life and

 * The idea that we have to go back to the valley to change what is past.

These are two very different concepts, yet they are used interchangeably in planning. They both mean that we have to deal with our past stories. If we go back and we can change the past, we can live the present. If we stay at the peak, we can focus our energy and resources to meet future challenges.

Personal development planning is a journey. We have to go back to our past so that we can change the mistakes that we made. We have to go forward to meet the challenges that we will face in the future.

Personal development planning is a continuous process. It is never-ending.

Personal development planning is not a journey that we have to make once and then never return to again. We have to keep going back and forth between the past and future until we conquer our past challenges and change the future path that we are on.
